Making the house a home...Part II
While excited about decorating a new house, the reality is that we'll only be in our German home for 2 years. We want it to feel inviting, finished and homey, but would rather save our Euros for our Euro Getaways. Along with the baby's room, we also brought most of our master bedroom furniture, but needed to purchase for and furnish a dining room, living room & guest bedroom/office. So... Insert about 100 IKEA trips here. It's well-known that IKEA is the place to go for affordable, modern furniture. It's a massively massive store, but you can get basically everything you need for your house while there -- and some meatballs. Their pieces are simple & modern and lend themselves really well to some crafty upgrades! AKA - IKEA hacks! As we were shopping both online & in our local Deutschland store, I kept an eye out for furniture that could be easily DIY'ed for a more custom look. Stay tuned for an upcoming post with the details of my DIYs.
This is our upper level and what you see as you enter our front doorway. You can see Asher's room there to the right (the AJM initials) and the master bed/bathroom & guest bathroom are all behind me from this vantage point.
Every room has walls of windows that let in some pretty amazing light and scenery. We still need to change out some photos in frames, but I'd say that this part of the house is like 99.9% complete!
We LOVE our table and it's definitely a piece we plan to bring back to the States -- assuming our next house has a dining room large enough for it! I often change up our tablescape throughout the year, but, these may be sticking around for a while.
Coming from our tiny Prairie Village, KS house, this kitchen is a dream. SO much cooking & storage space. I mean...you guys...we have EMPTY drawers and cabinets...whhaaaaat??!
We had an awkward little corner in the main dining room area and weren't really sure how to use it. We decided to make a little seating nook that has turned out to be a pretty great place to read, drink a cup of foamy Nespresso deliciousness and for little man Asher to play. Not to mention, I'm totally obsessed with the indigo blue color of these chairs!
We spend a lot of time in our basement, playing with Asher, netflixing, ya know, the usual. The heated floors throughout our house are adjustable for each room which helps to keep our basement nice and warm during the chilly German winter months. I'm really not sure how I'll live without them when we return home ;).
We also have a full bathroom and guest room downstairs too, but they aren't pictured in this post. Guess, you'll just have to come visit us to check them out ;)
We're looking forward to shopping for some outdoor furniture this spring to put outside on both the upper and lower terraces. The comfortably mild spring, summer & fall temps in Germany are perfect for outdoor dining and entertaining.
And there ya have it! The tour of our humble new abode! We've been really happy with how everything has come together & feel right at home. Now, book your trips & come visit us. :)
