Lux.
You guys. It's like really really really cold here. January was a total tease and February showed up as the real deal. I've been complaining about this constant-cold constantly, I know. But like seriously, Spring cannot come soon enough. I am beyond ready to wear outfits with exposed ankles and downsize my puffy puffer coat. This time last year we took our first getaway as expats to sunny Barcelona. Gosh, what a beautiful city.
This winter we spent our weeks dreaming up & booking our spring trips, but neglected to plan any warm-weather-winter escapes. But I guess as they say, if you can't beat 'em join 'em. Because it's basically cold everywhere nearby right now, why not at least change up the scenery...
Our friend from The States (hi Josh!) had a work trip to Germany pop up and spent a few days with us beforehand. So we did some research and picked a driveable day trip locale that was new to all of us. We picked Luxembourg City, Luxembourg for a few reasons:
1) It's a city...but it's ALSO it's own little country. SO we get to add another country to our globetrotting travel diaries. If only we got passport stamps for traveling within the EU.
2) It's less than 3 hrs away from Frankfurt. And if you've ever taken a drive with a toddler, I need not explain.
3) It's a beautiful drive. And there are some cool German cities along the way that totally warrant a pit stop.
4) A friend had recently been there and had tons of recs for us.
5) They speak French. Okay that might not have been on Jason's list of reasons to go there, but it was on mine. Isn't French just the prettiest language ever?
So we got there and stayed at a super nice hotel (Yay for off-peak travel rates!) right next to the Museum of Modern Art. We checked in and started walking around. We immediately noticed this cool juxtaposition between really beautiful modern buildings and old, traditional architecture. We loved the look of the city from moment one.
We ate ... Mexican food. I know that makes like ZERO sense, but we just can't find great Mexican food in Germany so we literally jump on any and every opportunity to eat the good stuff. This was one of the restaurants recommended by our friend (see #4 above). And we guac'ed out. Asher loved the elotes and we got our one and only full group pic of the trip! Mamacita was yummy and the staff was just so totally friendly and helpful.
Oh and if you're wondering how we manage all this travel with a toddler stuff... this pic says it all.

So, after that we shopped ... because well, it's me, but also because Delta lost Josh's luggage ... like they literally had no idea where it was for 6 days. Got it back just in time for him to head back home to KC. But thankfully, there were plenty of fashionable coat options for him to choose from. It was CHILLY so this was a a necessary purchase. We drank .. espressos and lattes (and apple juice and milk).
Asher showed off his new-found frolicking skills and looked so totally adorable in his fur hood. He was a great little traveler this weekend despite the chilly temps. He absolutely refuses to wear mittens so we kept him super snuggled in his stroller snuggie most of the time.
Ps I was super annoyed with the hubs for being all hubsy & messing up loads of pics. For every keeper I end up with about 28 bloopers. But this one is kinda cute. :)
We walked into the old town and stopped and saw some really incredible views. We stopped at a little bar before hailing a cab back up the hill.
And yes, you know you want to say it. We had a baby ... in a bar. But it was mostly empty and we peaced out before (okay right after) they dimmed the lights and turned on house music. They served this super amazing charcuterie platter that we all chowed down on and Asher got some really great bro time in.
The next day we stopped in Trier, Germany on our way home. Trier is for sure a city worth seeing. It dates back to the 4th Century BC. Yeah. WOW. There are Roman ruins and museums and ancient city gates that surround the old town. Unfortunately, it was beyond cold that day. So we saw most of these sights from afar, from the inside of a cafe before we headed back home. But I'd highly recommend the quick 40 min drive from Lux if you find yourself there sometime in the future!
Thanks for reading! Happy - almost - Springtime :)
ever yours,
